When I ride a motorbike, it is all about the feeling of total freedom, of really immersing yourself in the scenery around you, rain or shine, your mind is freer when you’re riding a motorcycle. I think it is one of the best ways to really explore a place and I can recommend everyone to at least give it a try. Here’s why you should travel on a motorbike.
It’s all about the scenery
The difference with motorbike travel and all other forms is that you are in the scene, rather than being a passive watcher through a frame (window). When you ride a bus, a car or whatever, you are confined to this little space, almost like in a cage. When you are riding a motorbike, you are right there, right in the middle of it all. You become part of the whole beautiful picture.
Freedom and Flexibility
The freedom of riding a motorbike is unmatched. You can do whatever you want and you are not confined to a schedule, it’s all you. You can take that interesting side road you just passed, you can stop for a photo, you can eat where and when you want, you can stop as often as you want and do whatever you want.
There is nothing like the sense of self-sufficiency and independence that comes from getting on a bike and twisting the throttle. On a motorcycle, it’s just your freedom of mind inside that helmet. You are in control of you, totally and completely. You feel the immediacy of your actions and decisions.
The stunning views
The vantage point from a motorbike gives an unobstructed 180-degree view wherever you go. You can see the road in front of you and the beautiful scenery to your left and right. There is no better way to take in all the views than riding straight through the view itself.
It brings you zen
It’s a good time for peace and meditation, away from the mindless crap of everyday life. Riding can be a cathartic experience where you ‘blow out the cobwebs’, cleanse the mind of the week’s built-up minutia and think about nothing but the task in hand. On the road, the constant monitoring of your situation—speed, angle, body posture, road condition, lane position, possible hazards, etc.—serves as a meditation that clears your mind of the crap.
Get off the beaten track
Traveling by motorbike makes this very easy. You will pass side roads which you can go down, you will spot signs pointing to an interesting site not mentioned in your guide book or you will pass interesting locations where you can explore a bit.
You can discover places which you most probably would have missed otherwise. You are free to roam around on a bike and you can visit those lesser known places that tourists don’t. Who knows, you might even discover a hidden gem.
It’s Exciting
The thrill of motorcycling is too often phrased in terms of fear and risk. I suspect there are plenty of people who would be put off by them. There is an adrenaline aspect to riding. When I put the bike above the speed limit, swoop through a section of corners or get my knee down, there is that rush. That is one of the reasons I ride and for some, it is the only reason they ride. In simple terms. It’s fucking fun.
It can be practical
There’s a financial benefit. Bikes can be fuel efficient and since doing basic maintenance (e.g., oil changes) is easier with a motorcycle, you can save some cash there too. Motorcyclists enjoy lower costs at toll booths and parking is pretty much always free and easy. You can bypass all that shitty traffic and get to work a lot quicker than you ever had before.
Adventure awaits
Riding a motorbike is all about the adventure. Adventure is just around the corner when you have a motorbike. Just get on the bike and ride, it’s that easy. It’s so easy to discover adventure, whether you take it around Europe for a month, over to France for the weekend or around the countryside for the afternoon. Adventure is only a few revs away.
